Where the City meets the Sea: Street Style from Brisbane to Coolangatta

Even though they are only an hour apart, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are two cities that present different cultures and styles that are each completely unique.
One's coastal and one thrives off the CBD and sprawling suburbs, giving the people and places different experiences and customs that shape how the everyday person dresses and expresses themselves.
Determined to explore this idea of how culture shapes fashion, even in slightly different environments, I decided to photograph favourite street styles: two from Brisbane CBD and two from Coolangatta, on the south side of the Coast.
After chatting to these people, it's easy to tell that their inspirations draw from a wide variety of sources, from the internet to international fashion even to styles from the opposite gender.

Styler 1: Arak, Brisbane, 29

Spotted?
CottonOn, Queen Street Mall, Brisbane CBD
What is he wearing?
Distressed blue denim, with a psychedelic tee, rainbow plaited belt, purple G-Shock watch, aztec sneakers with a floral bucket hat
What inspires him?
"I actually love looking at female styles and incorporating them into my wardrobe. I just bought a coat from Forever21 actually! Other than that probably the internet."
Celebrity Inspiration: Infinite (boy band)
Why does it work?
This eclectic look is traditionally mismatched, but works so well. It's playfulness and kitsch accessories prove that just because something clashes, doesn't mean it can't work to create a totally unique outfit.
How can you pull off this look?
Is it bright? Is it distressed? Could you imagine a girl in japan wearing it? Then pile it on! Layering and contrasting prints with staple denim is the perfect way to be edgy whilst keeping on trend.

Styler 2: Brian, Brisbane, 19

Spotted?
Hanging out in Queen Street Mall, Brisbane CBD
What is he wearing?
Casual monochrome striped shirt, loose black jeans (cuffed), black Birkenstocks, vintage watch, camo backpack with Ray-Ban inspired sunglasses
What inspires him?
"I usually look on the internet for my inspiration, otherwise I like to keep it casual. I recently moved from Korea so I'm still finding out what styles to wear in Australia."
Celebrity Inspiration: Robert Pattinson
Why does it work?
Just like Brian said, it's casual! It's not hard to look chic whilst staying comfortable and this guy pulls it off perfectly. The combination of stripes, cuffed jeans and Birkenstocks bring something new to the table, how often do you see guys wearing a traditionally female shoe? Effortless, stylish, perfect.
How can you pull it off?
A simple pair of black denim can have endless uses. Keeping it monochrome automatically gives your wardrobe endless combinations, and with a statement piece like a backpack or watch, it can pull the look together. Simple colours and prints instantly give your look a fresh and classic vibe. Why not try something you wouldn't usually wear, or a piece that the opposite gender would style?

Styler 3: Holly, Gold Coast, 19

Spotted?
Coolangatta Beach Walk, Gold Coast
What is she wearing?
Straight neck-line crop top, high waisted faded jeans, bohemian inspired belt with chunky sandals
What inspires her?
"I like to head to the local op shops and try to find unique pieces I can incorporate into my wardrobe. Sometimes the strangest piece can work so well. I like to look at fashion blogs too."
Celebrity Inspiration: Kylie Jenner
Why does it work?
You wouldn't expect to see jeans at the beach, but Holly's unique style works to give her ensemble a casual yet on-trend look. A feminine neckline shows off the décolletage whilst the chunky sandals bring the look together. The cute statement belt gives a pop of colour and the un-cuffed jeans are so perfectly "mom couture"
How can you pull off this look?
Basics, basics, basics! A simple black top can be worn in a million ways, and Holly's way is just one to maximise your wardrobe. Also hit up local op shops for a bargain while supporting great causes. A good pair of sturdy sandals can also be transitioned from day into night effortlessly and can be worn at almost any destination. A patterned belt can pull a whole look together, so it's always a great investment!

Styler 4: Jarrod, Gold Coast, 18

Spotted?
Kirra Beach, Gold Coast
What is he wearing?
Khaki pinstripe oversized tee, black skinny jeans (cuffed), blue crew socks with distressed Nikes, feminine sunglasses
What inspires him?
"I like to check out what's on the runways overseas, but since I'm not a millionaire I usually keep it understated and take advantage of simple pieces I can pair with plain shirts or jumpers."
Celebrity Inspiration: Matt Corby
Why does it work?
Pulled straight from the 90's, Jarrod works a sporty yet casual look, with a trendy combination of stripes, classic denim and footwear. Although simple, this outfit is perfectly understated and proves that a cuffed pant and sneaker pairing can give any t-shirt or sweater an instant boost. The feminine sunglasses also give his look a new twist, keeping the look fresh.
How can you pull off this look?
Invest in a good pair of plain sneakers. Although they might be a splurge, quality is key and they will guarantee you a lifetime of wear. From jeans to dresses to shorts in the summer, a nice pair of sneaks can be matched with so many outfits and, like Jarrod, can give a simple jean and t-shirt combo a kick of sports chic.
